General Skating Information
What is the best age to start skating?
Any age! Whether you are looking for a fun, recreational sport or a fast-paced competitive tract, you can join skating at any age!
How do I start figure skating lessons?
The Greeley Ice Haus offers many Learn to Skate classes for youth and adults. Visit greeleyrec.com to register for classes or talk to the staff at The Greeley Ice Haus.
When should I start private lessons?
Private lessons can be started at any level – from Snowplow Sam and beyond.
How do I get a private coach?
Greeley Ice Haus employs many figure skating coaches that are available for private lessons. Not all Learn to Skate coaches are licensed and insured to take on private students. To find an available coach, you can either ask the front desk at the Ice Haus or look for their business cards at the front desk.
How much does a private coach cost?
This will vary based on each coach and how often you take lessons. Some coaches will even teach group lessons for a reduced per-person cost.
How do I take care of my skates?
Skates are an expensive investment. Generally, the farther you progress into skating, the more expensive your skates become – from more ankle support to higher quality blades for complicated moves. To prolong the life of your skate, there’s a couple things you can do.
- Keep them dry. Make sure to dry the blade after use to prevent rust. Use a dry towel to get as much moisture off the blade as possible. Skates can be stored with soakers – a cloth covering that slips over the blade.
- Boot covers. These are thin pieces of fabric that stretch over your skate. They will not guarantee your boots avoid all damage (they are cut easily with blades) but they help prevent scuffs and small cosmetic damage.
- Polish. Keep your boots clean and scuff free with a good leather cleaner, conditioner, and polish.
- Storage. Try to keep your skates stored in a protective bag to prevent rubbing against each other or other items during transport. Many skaters choose to use Zuca bags for this purpose.
General MVSC Information
How do I join Mountain View Skating Club?
Joining MVSC is easy! Visit EntryEeze to apply for a new membership. The website will walk you through the entire process.
What does it cost to join MVSC?
MVSC offers a variety of memberships to accommodate people of all areas of interest – coaches, families, adults, professionals, etc. See the full list on the EntryEeze website.
Are there other costs in the club besides membership dues?
It depends. We try to hold a variety of fundraisers throughout the year to help pay for things like specialty training camps, social events and parties, community participation events and more. So depending on how much we raise during these fundraisers, members may be asked to pay to help cover costs such as ice rental and coaching fees. Just remember – the more you help to raise funds, the less you’ll have to pay!
We also have club apparel that is sold at members’ expense.
How do I get club apparel?
MVSC uses PersonaliTeez to custom make club jackets. They start with a basic MVSC logo on the back ($55) and can be customized with rhinestones for bling and embroidering the skaters name for additional costs. The sizes run very, very small and we recommend ordering about 2 sizes up.
We also use GoJo’s in Greeley for other club apparel. They print in batches, meaning they do not offer on-demand orders. MVSC opens up their store several times a year (usually for 2-3 weeks at a time) and we have to meet a minimum of 18 items for them to complete our order. If we fail to meet the minimum, the order is cancelled and money is refunded. Make sure you don’t wait too long to put in your order when we send out the link!
How do I keep my membership in good standing?
Memberships are kept in good standing with volunteer hours. MVSC requires members over 18 to log 24 hours of volunteer time throughout the membership year and members 10-17 years old 10 hours of volunteer time. A volunteer hour form can be found under Membership Resources or here.
What can I do to meet the volunteer hour requirement?
We offer a variety of options for our members to log volunteer hours. In-person volunteering, such as helping with the local competition, are a great way to start. We also offer the option to “purchase” hours at $25/hr. Fundraising efforts can be counted as well as planning club events. Joining the Board or a committee will also guarantee a good amount of hours. Our main concern is that each member help to make the club successful so please reach out if you need help meeting this requirement. A volunteer hour form to document hours can be found under our Membership Resources page or here.
How do I contact MVSC?
In Person: members are at the rink constantly, with a higher percentage on Saturday during LTS lessons. Feel free to ask the Ice Haus staff to point us out.

Competition Information
Is competing a requirement of club membership?
Absolutely not! We have many members that do compete but we also have many that do not. Our club takes pride in offering activities for a variety of interests including competitions, shows, recreation, and even social.
How do I decide when to compete?
That will depend on you and your coach. Competitions are offered starting at the Snowplow Sam level and continue through professional levels.
When are the competitions?
The 2022-23 Compete USA Series list of competitions can be found here. The complete Mile High Schedule including test sessions is found here.
How do I register for competitions?
There are two main platforms to register for competitions – EntryEeze and USFSA’s EMS. Each competition decides which platform based on the events they offer. MVSC will try to communicate when registrations are open and what platform they are using.

What does it cost to compete?
Each club hosting a competition will decide their entry fees. They usually do a higher cost for the first event you register for and a lower cost for each subsequent event. The first event is usually $75 – $115 with added events in the range of $20 – $40. Practice Ice sessions are recommended and are generally in the range of $15 – $25. Please only use these prices as an estimate, not a guarantee.
A competitive skater is responsible for providing their own performance costumes. For females, this includes a dress or body suit and white or tan skates. For males, this includes a shirt/pants combo or body suit and black skates. The cost of the costume varies greatly. MVSC members generously donate costumes and skates to the club for the club to re-sale. This is a wonderful resource for skaters on a budget or for those young skaters that are constantly growing!
What are test sessions?
After the basic Learn to Skate levels, you’ll enter the Professional levels. There are a few different tracks you can take so talk to your coach to discuss your goals and what route you’ll take to get there. One thing is consistent though – testing. Unlike LTS’s tests that are signed off by the coach, the professional levels will need to be tested into. Skaters go in front of judges to receive a pass/retry for levels. Test sessions are time slots provided by clubs to allow members (and usually non-members) the chance to get in front of judges to perform their tests.
